I’ve been playing guitar for over 40 years. Along the way I have received some great advice. I have also learned a lot of things the hard way and through experience. I would like to share some of that advice with you. These are in no particular order.

This tip is not just for beginners. It will serve you well your whole life.

Be Open To Different Musical Styles

People often have rigid views of what “good” music is. While there is nothing wrong with only liking one style of music, you should try listening to styles of music you aren’t familiar with. Listen to the guitar players in other styles of music. You may not care for that particular style of music, but you should be able to appreciate good guitar playing. You may be surprised at what you can learn from guitarist who play other styles of music. Don’t stop at listening either, try playing other styles of music also. You will probably pick up some useful new techniques or rhythms or riffs. Obviously, it is far easier to focus on only one style of music, and you should certainly focus on the styles you like best. But a little variety never hurts. The more different influences you can add to your playing, the more unique it will be. Plus, the more styles of music you know, the more likely you’ll be to get a gig.
